CMMI Institute Case Studies - Fujitsu Services

Fujitsu Services, a major systems integration and service management organisation, faced the challenge of improving their capability and consistency of process across the organisation, and wished to implement CMMI ahead of the market. A key initial challenge was in the identification of the most appropriate service stream in which to implement CMMI so as to ensure the realisation of maximum business benefit. An initial external assessment indicated that Fujitsu should implement CMMI maturity level 3 across the entire organisation in one programme.

Fujitsu brought in Trinity, who proposed an incremental, less risky implementation of CMMI into individual business units, and the result was the creation of a series of ‘Solutions Centres’ from a previously large, undifferentiated Application Service Group. Key challenges were the integration of CMMI driven changes with the organisation’s existing ISO requirements, and overcoming organisational expectations that CMMI would be ‘done to’ them, rather than the consensual, ‘bottom up’ approach actually adopted.

Fujitsu successfully achieved maturity level 3 across the Application Service Group through a single CMMI appraisal lasting eight weeks which culminated in June 2006, at that time the longest continuous appraisal period undertaken within the UK. Trinity’s approach, centred on mentoring staff throughout the process, ensured that the processes were embedded effectively and continued to operate post engagement. Fujitsu now has a team of CMMI-Institute qualified process improvement practitioners that continue to progress and support best practice within the organisation.
