CMMI Institute Case Studies - General Dynamics UK

General Dynamics UK Limited is a leading prime contractor and complex systems integrator working in partnership with the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD) and other allies.

Our consultants first helped General Dynamics UK Limited Mission Systems (Hastings) to achieve Maturity Level 3 of the CMMI (including IPPD and Supplier Sourcing) in 2006 providing consultancy, training and appraisal services. Since then we have continued to provide consultancy and have delivered CMMI Institute training, including High Maturity training. During 2009 and 2010 we performed a number of Class B and Class C appraisals and training events to ensure continued compliance to the CMMI and prepare for a multi-site SCAMPI A appraisal covering the Hastings and Wales sites. In May 2010 General Dynamics were successfully reaccredited at Maturity Level 3 CMMI-DEV + IPPD v1.2.

The following is a statement made by Neil Taylor, Director of Engineering GDUK in September 2010.

“General Dynamics UK has been on a journey for the last two years driven out of the desire to benchmark our business and to improve the effectiveness of our processes. We refined our business processes using the leading practices in the CMMI Institute model and achieved a step change in both process integrity and process adherence. This has been a very fulfilling and visible activity where the attainment of CMMI Maturity Level Three was secondary to the change programme for the organisation and its people. One remarkable by-product from the process is the wealth gained from a new Lessons Learned culture. This would not have happened as quickly and as comprehensively were it not for the CMMI adoption, and it may not have happened at all. The team appreciated the constructive coaching that the CMMI consultants provided and their experience added to the quality of thought that we had to put in.
